For this week’s Wednesday BBQ Sauce Review. I am going to review Pork Barrel BBQ Sauce. Now if you are a fan of Grilling with Rich, you already know that we interviewed Heath Hall from Pork Barrel BBQ on an earlier episode of Meet the Pros, so now it is time to review their sauce.

Pork Barrel BBQ Sauce and Grilling with Rich

I was really looking forward to trying this barbecue sauce as I only have heard good comments about it and even though I met them and tried their BBQ food during Meat Week here in Washington D.C. I have not done a blind taste test of just their Barbecue sauce, so I went to the local Safeway here outside the beltway and was really glad that they had a bottle for me to try.

Like we do with all of our posts here at Grilling with Rich we are going to get some background on Pork Barrel BBQ Sauce:

The story of Pork Barrel BBQ begins in early 2006 during a heated Congressional Budget debate. Two fatigued United States Senate staffers were working late and discussing the late night food options on Capital Hill – both dreamed of barbecue and wished there was a good barbecue joint in Washington, D.C. – while Senators were engaged in a debate over the merits of Pork Barrel spending. Suddenly an idea popped into their heads. Those staffers were us, Heath Hall and Brett Thompson, and that idea is now a reality – Pork Barrel BBQ.

As recently as early 2008, Pork Barrel BBQ remained as nothing more than the idea we had conceived two years earlier as Senate staffers. This began to change in the spring of 2008 when we decided it was time to dust off our idea and give it a go. In June, after weeks in the kitchen we convened the first meeting of the Pork Barrel BBQ Kitchen Cabinet and asked our Cabinet Members to rate six variations of our initial product. The following week we reconvened the Kitchen Cabinet with a new variation crafted from the previous weeks comments in mind. That afternoon, with the blessing of the Kitchen Cabinet, our first product – Pork Barrel BBQ’s All American Spice Rub – was finalized.

In December 2008, after a number of months working through the world of starting a business Pork Barrel BBQ was officially founded.  We founded Pork Barrel BBQ at the peak of the economic crisis and wanted to prove that a company not owned or operated by the federal government could succeed, and if you had a good idea and were willing to work hard, it was still possible to grab a piece of the “American Dream.” During the holiday season of 2008 we sold nearly $2,000 worth of our All American Spice Rub – if you knew any of our friends or family you probably got a tin of spice rub for Christmas.

Pork Barrel BBQ All-American Sauce

Now that the Pork Barrel BBQ history is out of the way it is time to get saucy and down to business.

Pork Barrel BBQ Original BBQ Sauce and their Pork Barrel BBQ Sweet BBQ Sauce are Kansas City style sauces,while their newest sauce, Pork Barrel BBQ Mustard BBQ Sauce is a Carolina style.

What I liked about the barbecue sauce:

I really enjoyed the flavor profiles of the barbecue sauce it really hit the mark and had amazing barbecue flavors. What was really interesting about the sauce was that the flavor profiles were not to over baring and most importantly were not really spicy at all. Another reason why I enjoyed the sauce when I tasted it with my chicken nuggets (which for some reason has become my standard item to taste BBQ sauce, I wonder why that is??) it really made me want more and more of the sauce. I also like the constancy of the sauce. What I mean by that I enjoyed that it wasn’t too thick or it wasn’t too thin, it was really good, defitantly some great flavor profiles.

Overall Impressions:

I can see why this sauce was rated by Men’s Magazine as a great product and I can see a lot of great things happening for both Heath and his partner. I couldn’t find anything really that I didn’t enjoy! and I look forward to covering their continued success when they open their restaurant right outside the beltway! The one question that I had after I finished their All-American BBQ Sauce, I wondered to myself what does the rub and their mustard sauce taste like? Maybe another post/review later on will satisfy my curiosity. Maybe I need to purchase a pack of sauces to really get the full picture?
