Follow Grilling With Rich:
I love trying different types of grills and smokers because it is fun and also it is interesting to see how the minor or major differences between cookers impact flavor, texture and also cooking times. I have heard a lot about the Pit Barrel Cooker company so I was happy that I was able to get one to review and test out.
Description of the Pit Barrel Cooker Company
The Pit Barrel Cooker Co. is a family-owned business that was established in 2010 in Strasburg, Colorado by an Iraq war veteran. All of our products are proudly made in the USA. Our flagship product is the Pit Barrel Cooker, which combines the best qualities of smokers, slow cookers and BBQs into one product.
Review and Rating of the Pit Barrel Cooker
There were many things that I liked about the Pit Barrel Cooker from the ease of cooking and set up to the actual results of the smoked meats and just some overall thoughts of the Pit Barrel Cooker. I can’t wait to see some cool accessories that Pit Barrel might have in store for the future. Some accessories that I would love to see would be a circular rotating spit that could be attached to the top of the barrel and powered by electricity, a hook/stick to pick up the charcoal bin as it takes a long time for the coals to cool down.
Ease of Putting Together: With only three pieces of the cooker that were needed the ease of putting the cooker together was obviously really simple and easy. All you need to do is take the pieces out of the box and bam you are ready to go and create some great smoked meats. This is why the Pit Barrel Cooker is so easy to pick up and move to all the different types of locations and perfect for tailgating and also just brining it as an additional cooker for a backyard barbecue or barbecue competition.
Quality of Product: I like anything that is made in America and each Pit Barrel Cooker drum and lid are treated with a superior-grade porcelain enamel finish that gives the Pit Barrel cooker not only great looks, but also the ability to last for years which is great because a good pit that gets well seasoned is something to keep in the backyard for years.
Cook Results: In addition to testing the ease of putting the Pit Barrel Cooker together and also just the quality of the Pit Barrel Cooker, I wanted to use the Pit Barrel cooker when smoking a nice 4lb beef Tenderloin. I even used the Pit Barrel Cooker Game and Beef Rub and it turned out amazing. Not only did the cooker cook the meat perfectly it also had an amazing smoke ring when I sliced it and the best part of the whole cook was that I didn’t have to worry about the barrel holding the proper temperature because the barrel stayed nice hot throughout the cook. I have to say that the beef turned out amazing and did not dry out while cooking. Because the meat hung, the juices dripped down from the top of the meat to the bottom of the meat and kept the meat moist.
Overall Review: Overall, I loved the Pit Barrel Cooker and I can’t wait to try to smoke another type of meat or even smoke some sausages. The Pit Barrel cooker is not only a great affordable smoker it is a great change of pace from your normal box, pellet and other types of smokers. The Pit Barrel Cooker really brings the fun and the “grit and grime” of smoking foods in a drum back into the barbecue world.
