Recently, the Washington DC area has had an explosion of great barbecue restaurants. The Washington DC area has become so attractive for barbecue restaurants now a great barbecue restaurant from the midwest has made an imprint into the DC area: Oklahoma Joe’s BBQ.
About Oklahoma Joe’s:
Joe’s journey to being one of the greatest barbeque chefs of all time began over 25 years ago, when he saved up $2000 and built 18 smokers that he took to the State Fair. After the smoke had cleared, he had sold all the smokers he made, and had orders for 200 more. Thus Oklahoma Joe’s was born.
With his passion for smokers naturally came a love of barbecue that led him to become a Master of Que, and compete in national competitions. From his first entry in the T-Town BBQ Cook-off in Tulsa to winning the coveted Grand Champion Overall Title at the Jack Daniel’s World Championship, Joe and his friends have gone on to take over 300 titles.
Joe continued to build smokers. In fact, he built over one million of them in the following years. But Joe wanted to be more than a smoker manufacturer. He set his sights on opening a restaurant. After much persuading, he finally convinced his good friend and cook off rival, Jeff Stehney, to go into the business with him. The first restaurant was opened in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1994. The Kansas City restaurant opened the following year.

Review and Rating of Oklahoma Joe’s: Washington D.C. Area
When I went to Oklahoma Joes I had a chance to not only go behind the scenes and learn about Oklahoma Joes rich barbecue traditions and history but also taste some truly amazing barbecue food. From their barbecued beans to their pulled smoked turkey I was truly blow away with the quality and taste of the barbecue.
Since I basically had everything on their menu I figured for this review I would break the review up into the different courses.
It is very easy to mess up barbecue and totally make it not pleasant to eat but at Oklahoma Joe’s they surely make barbecue a true flavor explosion in your mouth. From the amazing smoked turkey to the pulled pork and the brisket and even the burt ends the barbecue left me wanting more and more. I even tried their BarbeQulossal The Q specialty sandwich which truly an amazing experience. The sliced brisket is topped with smoked provolone cheese and two onion rings on a kaiser bun had to be one of my favorites and something that I could see myself coming back for over and over again. My second favorite protein was actually come as a bit of a shock and that was the smoked Turkey. The smoked turkey was not dried out, actually it was the complete opposite. The turkey was so moist and had the perfect of smokiness and also had the perfect amount of barbecue rub, basically it was a pure heavenly experience.
Sides Dishes: Besides the main dishes, my favorite side dish was the amazing baked beans. I heard that the beans where legendary and boy were people right. From the little pieces of smoked brisket to the sweetness of the barbecue sauce, the beans were just heavenly and something that everyone that goes to Oklahoma Joes’ must get.
Overall, my experience at Oklahoma Joes was an amazing experience and is a true barbecue restaurant experience that you must go to if you are ever in the neighborhood. If you are looking for authentic barbecue competition food then Oklahoma Joe’s is the place for you! I know that I can’t wait to go back! Furthermore, Oklahoma Joes now ranks high on my must try barbecue joints in America, most likely in the top 5 for sure!
